Product Description
It is the 31st century, a time of endless wars that rage across human-occupied space. As star empires clash, these epic wars are won and lost by BattleMechs, 30-foot-tall humanoid metal titans bristling with lasers, autocannons and dozens of other lethal weapons; enough firepower to level entire city blocks. Your elite force of MechWarriors drives these juggernauts into battle, proudly holding your faction's flag high, intent on expanding the power and glory of your realm. At their beck and call are the support units of armored vehicles, power armored infantry, aerospace fighters and more, wielded by a MechWarrior's skillful command to aid him in ultimate victory. Will they become legends, or forgotten casualties? Only your skill and luck will determine their fate!
The product of more than twenty years of gaming experience, Total Warfare presents the rules of the Classic BattleTech game system as never before. For the first time, all the rules for various units that have a direct impact on the deadly battlefields of the thirty-first century appear in a unified rules set: from BattleMechs to ProtoMechs, Combat Vehicles to Support Vehicles, infantry to aerospace fighters and DropShips. Interwoven and meticulously updated, Total Warfare provides the most detailed and comprehensive rules set published to date for BattleTech - the perfect companion for standard tournament play.
Total Warfare is the single-source rulebook for people who play Classic BattleTech. It is not intended to teach new players the game, but rather to serve as a reference work for people who know the game, while introducing more technologies and expansive rules than appear in the basic box set. The introductory game in the BattleTech line is the Classic BattleTech Introductory Box Set. New players should pick up that product before diving into this one.

4 out of 5 stars New Tricks for Old Veterans   May 5, 2010
E. Hess (Middle of Nowhere, Ohio, USA)
Short point: If you're out to crash giant robots into each other and no more, this book isn't for you. Stick to the basic CBT starter set and be happy.

Long point: If, on the other hand, you realize that the average war isn't solely dependent on giant robots for the win, this is the right book for you. Having been a BT4 player since just after 2000 (I've had pages fall out of my copies of BT Master Rules and Maximum Tech, they are so heavily used), it is good to see a nice chunk of L1, L2 and L3 Battletech codified and compiled into one easy reference. It is a big book, and for some things you will have to hunt and read until you memorize it, but for the one-stop slaughterhouse in the Inner Sphere and Clan territories, this is well worth the sticker price. The authors even went so far as to chop up Aerotech and throw in the ground support system for good measure.

The downsides: Artillery is not covered in this volume. The space battle section of the Aerotech coverage only goes as far as Dropships, leaving Jumpships and Warships out entirely. The largest downside is simple: this is only the play rules. If you want to build your own units (one of the great hallmarks of Battletech), you will need the sister volume CBT Techmanual (Classic Battletech).

Rating Justification: Four out of five stars is well worth it, simply because they compacted and simplified a very large amount of BT4 into one play-oriented volume. It would have been nice to have the full spectrum of combat in one volume (Arty, space naval engagements, odds and ends not included here), but it is also logical that such concerns be handled in a more strategic setting (hence the third book, CBT Tactical Operations (Classic Battletech)).

Have a nice day.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book   December 29, 2009

This is an excellent compilation of the rules for the Battletech board game. Everything is covered from miniature rules to the aerotech. The writing is concise, and the tab set up for the pages allow for easy searching when looking up rules. The artwork is very well done and you even get some short stories to read to boot! I highly recommend this book if you are going to get into the Battletech board game!

5 out of 5 stars The Manual to a fantastic tactical wargame.   August 20, 2009

First let me tell everyone that if you are looking to get into Battletech this is not the manual to begin with. You want to start with the Battletech Introductory Box Set with its simplified rules on mech combat and starter materials (map sheets, miniatures, and reference sheets). When you decide that you like Battletech and that you crave more than what the introduction rules can give you (You want to see heightened realism, tanks, infantry, urban warfare, combined arms - land air sea.) then this is the book for you. If you are satisfied with just 'mech combat...you may want to save your money for something else.

The book is neatly divided into chapters similar to the introduction rules set except that it now includes ALL unit types. Movement will show you how 'mechs, infantry, vehicles, aircraft, etc... move rather than simply just mechs. This repeats itself for each chapter before entering chapters that detail the specific unit types and weaponry. At the end of the book there are several tables (that may also be downloaded from Catalyst for free) that help you organize everything in the book and to provide quick reference during play.

I first started with the Introduction Box. After that I got Sword and Dragon along with the map compilation sets. After picking up this book I began to introduce the new units and rules into our games at home, and my friends and I can never see ourselves going back to "simple" Battletech. Battletech has become our tactical wargame of choice.
