| Customer Reviews: simple, yet fun srpg for the ds. August 21, 2010 Robert Adams you are a high school student in japan living a normal life until suddenly the world needs you to fight off hordes of demons! lets break this game down a a little.
graphics: 7 this is a ds title so you cant expect mind blowing graphics and thats good because this game doesnt have them. graphics are good enough to play without being an eyesore but you wont be impressed by them.
story: 9 the story in this game revolves around you and your friends trying to survive a lockdown in toyko after the goverment learns of a demon outbreak. nothing new if youve played any other shin megami tensei titles but not something you see in most western games. i do enjoy the different outlook this game has on religion and christianity in particular however, some people may find these things offensive. remember, its just a game! the story did keep me interested throughout.
gameplay: 10 i love playing this game. the gameplay is very simple so some people who are looking for an complex strategy game might be disappointed but complex doesnt always make a game good. the gameplay is simple enough that just about anyone can learn it quickly but because of the deep customazation, it takes time to master.
character customization: 10 i love the demon fusion system. while the fusion system is present in all the shin megami tensei titles where you can fuse 2 or more demons together to get a new demon, this game simplifies it a little. in the previous games it would sometimes take forever levelling a demon, teaching it skills, then fusing it over and over hoping for the correct combo of skills to be passed on. this game makes it easier since you can just pick which skills you want to pass on. use your imagination and you can get just about any type of demon you want. you can also customize your human characters. each human gets 5 different slots for you to decide what abilities or enhancements you want to place there. since you can customize both humans and demons you can them form them into teams that work well together and that will be helpful in some of the tougher battles.
challenge: 7 this game isnt very difficult to finish. there are a few battles where you will probably need to rethink your strategy or even form a new team but overall its not hard. i would give it a 5 if not for the lucifer battle. the lucifer battle is extremely hard unless you have the perfect team or enter the fight at lv 99. you will have to do tons of grinding before you can win. optional battle not needed to finish the story.
value: 10 im a sucker for multiple endings. this game hass around 7 of them. you can view the different ending depending on which method you use to escape the lockdown. as you play the game and encounter other people trapped as you are some of them will give you their ideas on how to get out. if you follow them, you will get a different ending. the new game plus feature allows you to carry over your skills and demons to a new game making subsequent playthroughs a breeze. i finished the game 3 times before taking a break from it.
overall id reccommend this game to anyone who is not offended by different views on the christian religion. if youve played other games in the series without taking offense then most likely youll be ok with devil survivor. there are also some people who feel the game is too simple and i disagree. i think the easy to learn gameplay and somewhat short battles make this a great handheld game for when youre on the go.
An enjoyable game May 14, 2010 Michael Rubino (Mooresville, NC USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have to say Atlus has been doing a fantastic job moving to the ds and Shin Megami Tensei's Devil Survivor is an excellent edition. It is also the first Shin Megami tensei game to hit the ds and it is fantastic.
The storyline is superb and the fact that you, as the player, are the main character definitely brings you deeper into the world. The gameplay is similar to many of the other board style games where you move your characters a certain number of spaces and then choose your opponent. From there it turns into a usual RPG setting.
The designs of the demons in the game are great and the creation of demons in the Cathedral of Shadows is a nice touch much like in the Persona games also made by Shin Megami Tensei. Even level grinding isn't such a drag like is usual in other games but it can still get old (typical of any rpg you play pretty much).
The game has a deep storyline so there is a lot of dialogue but you will soon find yourself immersed in the story and excited to find out what you'll have to do next. It was difficult to put the game down.
However, this isn't a game for everyone because the game is pretty difficult and casual gamers may not find it as enjoyable as others. You will be frustrated at times and will have to level grind a bit or go back to the Cathedral of Shadows so you can create a demon with the stats you need to beat the next mission. Also, the choices you make effect what happens next. Your choices can either kill someone, give you a new ally, or make the game more difficult as you go on, etc. What's nice though is that there are multiple endings so each time you play through you aren't going through the exact same path over and over again. So far I have found at least four endings which amounts to at least more than 60 hours of gameplay. Yes, i have played through four times and enjoyed every bit of it.
The cons: I really have no problems with this game to be honest. Perhaps implementing both screens better would have been better than just one screen most of the time. Also, you never use the touch screen really with the stylus. Moving characters on the board could be a pain when not able to use the stylus since it could be unpredictable which space you highlight when using the directional pad. other than that I have had no problems at all. these are just small details that get overlooked almost immediately when you start getting into the game.
I highly recommend this game to anyone who owns a ds and is looking for an enjoyable and challenging rpg experience. This is a great edition for any Shin Megami Tensei fan or anyone new to the series.
Fantastic, one of the best on the DS May 14, 2010 C. Gage (USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Here's the quick guide to deciding weather or not you like this game.
-Do you like Pokemon, but tire of the series because you're too old or just got bored with it?
-Do you like strategy games like Final Fantasy Tactics or Disgaea?
If you answered yes to either of those, buy this game. For sure. 100%
A great rpg for SMT fans and newcomers! May 12, 2010 Magnus Raiker (Pensacola, FL USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I wanted to give Devil Survivor a try because of P3 & 4 and the good reviews. I was blown away; this might be my favorite DS game to date. The combat's pretty easy to grasp if you played any SMT game (demons, fusion, etc.); furthermore, it has enough quirks to make it standout from generic tactic games like the skill cracks and how to initiate combat. What truly takes the cake in Devil Survivor is the story with its ample choices, clever twists on mythologies, and dire circumstances. However, I recommend using a guide if you want to get the most out of the story in a single play through; I remember a few scenarios that delved into crucial information I could have easily missed had I not a guide. Of course, you can always play the games multiple times since there also multiple endings...
Just don't turn me into a cat! April 11, 2010 AlexJouJou (California) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I actually picked up this title when it was first released last summer. I played for about 2 hours and then put it down and didn't pick it up again. That's the thing with these Shin Megami games -- you really need to play until you get to the Demon Fusion part before making a decision. SMT is very text heavy (I've played three games only and one was Persona which was not my favorite) and you really have to like the story to be able to play this. You see it referenced in other reviews as well -- but it bears repeating -- the story is a huge part of the game. I happen to be pretty easy to please with stories and I like this one just fine. Even though I am a middle aged mom I have a teenager so everytime Yuzu gets all whiny I can relate!
Things I like:
* Music (interesting!)
* Central Menu and controls (excellent!)
* Characters are a bit flat but they do grow on you
* Battles -- best of Tactical and turn based RPG and, for me, they never get boring!
* Demon fusing - oh yeah baby this is FUN with a Capital F!
* Simplistic -- you aren't dealing with having to equip items or buy items (other than demons)
Things I can deal with but don't particularly like:
* Limited battles that can be used for leveling up - would have liked more options
* Items are not available to buy -- bit different than the normal RPG where you buy equiptment and items. You are (at least as far as I am which is about 15 hours into the game) limited to the skills you/your demons have
A word: Difficulty. Why yes...yes it is difficult IF you aren't using strength/weakness to your advantage and if you aren't fusing demons well and choosing good skills to pass on to the next demon. None of the SMT or Persona games I've played are easy. Frankly I find this a bit refreshing as many of the RPG's for the DS lately have lacked in challenge (REAL challenge -- not the fake random battle every step challenge...as so many have pointed out wash-rinse-repeat). I died once early on due to MY lack of skill in the fusing area. I remedied that and now I'm good. There are battles I come out of with 1 main character left with like 45 HP and that is just about as satisfying as any other life accomplishment LOL.
If you like Tactical games or turn based RPG's I would encourage you to pick BOTH Shin Megami Tensei games for the DS up. The other one, Srange Journey, is every bit as good and rewarding (though not really similar to this one other than the demon fusing thing) although more difficult. In terms of value for your dollar these rate exceptionally high!
