| Customer Reviews: WARNING: This game is for video game purists only! July 26, 2010 Andrew Tomchik (Miramar, FL) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am writing this review not to criticize this game, but to help people understand exactly what this game is. This is game is not your typical video game. This game has NO plot and NO story. I do not mean that the plot and story are bad or that they unfold poorly, I am being literal. There is a reason this game is so cheap, and there is a reason that you can also download this game (not an option most other video games sold on Amazon offer).
When you first start the game you create your own character with his or her strengths and weaknesses (just like a typical RPG). The game then teaches you how to fight (also somewhat typical). Once you are done learning, off you go to explore the world. The world essentially consists of a large country with a lot of towns and cities occupied by characters that are just there to send you on errands to other towns and cities. Nothing you do advances anything because there is nothing to advance. The towns and cities are divided up into countries or territories with lords and ladies that are either rivals with each other or allied with each other. By taking tasks from different characters you can gain favor with them while losing favor with others. The point in all of this is to enter combat. That is the sole purpose of the game, the combat. And don't get me wrong the combat is unique and really quite fun (I won't go into a lot of detail about the combat because other reviewers here have already done so, quite well I might add). But remember, that is the ONLY point to this game. You fight battles for the sake of fighting battles. Sure you character gets stronger and you can build a party, but all of this is just so you can fight more battles. If this is your cup of tea then I recommend this game for you. Unfortunately, it is not mine which is why my rating is so low. I am not telling you not to buy this game, just know what you are buying.
my review on game purchased July 11, 2010 walter the game came 2 days b4 it said it would and it was even more fun than the demo and overall great game and was in great condition
A great concept in the making May 30, 2010 Agamemnon (On the shores of Troy) Mount&Blade is an RPG--I do not mean this in the sense that it simply has a statistical element that progresses your character, as most other supposed "RPGs" do, but I mean it in the sense that it is as close as you will get to PnP RPGs. The truly wonderful about Mount&Blade is that the story of the game is what you make of it, from the moment you start your character from background creation to the very actions you take within the game in the time frame. And in a time frame indeed, for the game world of M&B is completely persistent and constantly changing, ensuring that game play does indeed change.
Perhaps the greatest aspect of M&B is what's mentioned in the title of the game: mounted combat. Yet again another game play feature that makes its way around to finally be executed wonderfully in a video game. Couple this with the "battlefield" element of combat and you have truly memorable skirmish experiences--perhaps even stories to tell when defending or besieging keeps and cities.
However it is not without its flaws, and they mostly reside within the quality of content. Although I suppose it's not all that surprising, considering the game was developed by four Turkish developers. One can only imagine if this IP was in the hands of a power-hitter developer or if they were backed with more money. Despite the lackluster quality, it is still a solid and very fun game. A definite recommend if you enjoy open-ended RPG game play with a battleground twist.
Immersive experience May 17, 2010 James H. Byrd (Sandpoint, ID USA) I've been having an excellent time with this game. It is a great deal of fun for the money. It takes a while to get used to the movement and rules of the world, but stumbling through the learning process is half the fun.
I've now spent dozens of hours playing and expect to spend hundreds more. Someone else pointed out how cool it is to jump on a horse and engage in battle, and I totally agree. I'm mostly a trader in the game, but enjoy the occasional run-ins with outlaws, the arena fights, and the tournaments.
One word of warning: It takes a while to get decent at fighting, partly because your character starts with low proficiencies in everything. Stick with it, and practice in the training area, arena, and tournament to build your skill.
The only thing stopping me from giving this game the highest rating is the lack of reference information about how to play the game. The forums help, but that's a rather disorganized way to get info. For example, I once agreed to get some cows for a village, but had no way to complete the quest because I couldn't figure out where to GET the cows!
In any case, spend the money and buy the game. I'm sure you won't regret it.
So much potential, but not fully realized May 12, 2010 L. Deleon (USA) This game is actually very fun and addictive when you first install and play it. The horse mounted combat is by far the best aspect of the game. Everything else seems underdeveloped or just plain missing. There is no plot, the voice acting is non-existent or horrible. All of the quests are tedious and annoying, and you get the same annoying quests over and over and over again, and unlike most games where you are rewarded for completing quests, the quests in this game are actually inconvenient and expensive for you to do. Most of the time the quests only reward you with "honor" or a better reputation with someone, but in the process you spend most of what little money you have since most quests require you to spend a bunch of your own money to complete. Ironically, the "honor" and reputation you work so hard to gain, doesn't even seem to affect the game anyways. My last game I just completely ignored all the honor and reputation quests and I am doing just fine without them. While the combat system takes some getting used to (it seems very hard at first) once you get the hang of it, you will leave a path of death and destruction in your wake, and have fun doing so. One of the best, if not the best feature of this game is that it is highly modable, and there are several interesting and fun mods that can easily be installed and played due to the games smart module system. The biggest weakness of the game is that it is just so undeveloped in some areas, it has so much room for improvement. Just a simple thing like typing up different possible responses and quest descriptions from the NPCs, but instead every NPC gives the exact same quests, with the exact same text / dialogue. Just a tiny bit if creativity and time to type a few extra paragraphs worth of text could have made this one facet 10x better. Just hiring a few people to do voice overs here and there would have added something to the game, even un-trained voice actors would have been better than nothing. In the end you may end up feeling as I did, that this game has so much potential, but it hasn't been fully realized yet. Perhaps sometime in the future someone will take the time to make this game the way it should be! In the end I had to take away 2 stars for the huge amount of things that are obviously missing or underdeveloped, and seem so easy to have done. I mean seriously give me a [...] budget, and 1 week, and I can, by myself, add a huge amount of improvements in the way of text, voice overs, etc...and yet after all the time and effort they spent on certain aspects of the game, they couldn't handle this simple amount of work / expense. To summarize:
The good:
* A unique RPG game different than the usual wizard and dragon stuff, based on medieval style combat with horses.
* Horse combat! It's fun! Jousting! Horse Archery!
* Lot's of cool mods!
* Cool castle / city sieges! (needs lots of work, but still can be fun)
* Lot's of cool weapons to enjoy destroying your foes with! (and mods add even more cool weapons!!)
Not so good:
* So many underdeveloped aspects of the game such as quests, text dialogue, voice acting, lack of a storyline...
* While the graphics are perfectly functional, they are not even close to top notch for the time this game was released.
* the sound is the bare minimal, maybe even less than that.
* There are bugs with the combat system, many times a weapon can go right through an enemy target and not do any damage, but it is not so bad that it breaks the game, as you can just attribute it to a normal "close miss".
* The AI is stupid as hell. When you first start playing the game, the AI will whoop you because you are not used to the combat system + you have crappy gear + your weapon skills are low level (speed and accuracy improves as your weapon skills raise via leveling). But as soon as those three things you have fixed with time, you realize the AI is exceedingly stupid. But what the AI lacks for in intelligence it will make up for by outnumbering you, high level archers will basically be "aimbots" that never miss, and no matter how high your weapon skills are, the AI (top tier units / bosses) always seems to swing swords 2x as fast as you can....and run 2x as fast as you can.
* After playing for a few days or maybe a few weeks, you will realize the game is exceedingly repetitive and it will then quickly start to bore you, you will install mods probably to breathe new life into it, but then in another few days again it will bore you to tears. (but it is very fun for the first few days).
4 stars for fun factor, because the horse combat can be so fun you forget about all the other issues / problems.
3 stars overall because there are so many deficiencies, I have to deduct at least 2 stars. 1 star deduction would not cover the huge amount of underdeveloped or missing things. But if you somehow missed this one when it was released, it is still a must try game, despite it's deficiencies.
