Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
You have just awakened in a world of ruin, having lost your memory. The world has been devastated by the "Blaze", which twisted the laws of nature. Meta-Beings now wander the barren land. In order to survive the world, people cling to their delusions, called "Baroques" and become warped by their own ideas. You must descend upon a mysterious tower, fighting through the foul denizens. The tower is constantly distorting, so you'll be in a new labyrinth every time you enter a room.

Acquire powerful stat-boosting parasites and combine them to multiply their potency

4 out of 5 stars Dark and even disturbing, but so fun   November 18, 2008

How does one review a game like Baroque? It is so unique and just plain weird. I've never played Rogue, which others are saying the game is similar to, but I do know that this game is extremely fun.

It's not a shooter, as another reviewer said. It is a mysterious, dark dungeon crawler, and the primary weapons you use are swords. There is one gun that you get, but it only has 5 ammo. You go down a tower floor by floor, fighting grotesque monsters and collecting a variety of items used to customize your character--parasites and brands are an excellent example. Although you have three ways of attacking with your weapon, you can also use different items as weapons which can really make the game fun. There are just soooo many items!

As others have said, once you die you start from level one with nothing (unless you figure out how to carry over a few select items of your choosing). This is part of what makes the game interesting, because the story is so morbidly strange. You know so little, but every time you get through the tower or die you are able to discover a little bit more of the story. I haven't finished it yet, and I find myself drawn to go through the tower again and again to finish filling in the gaps. The game also gets very challenging in the lowest levels of the tower--and I'm not even playing on Hard mode. Also, I've never found the wall with the face on it that others have talked about, so I guess I need to get through the tower multiple times to see it.

The game is eerie, and can sometimes send some chills down my spine (especially one floor in particular). It's hard to get tired of this game! The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is because you do end up restarting from level one and have to build yourself back up again. But don't make that scare you away from this game. If you like weird and dark dungeon crawlers, this is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Wii needs more titles like this!   October 20, 2008

I absolutely adored this game, but people with little patience might get frustrated. This game doesn't hold your hand at all, it tosses you into a crazy world and tells you 'okay figure it out!' I however enjoy the 'uncover the bizarre storyline' type of gameplay thats in Baroque, trying to figure out just what the heck is going on, its like you're in an insane asylum. Admittedly losing all your gear whenever you die or complete the tower can get tedious, but I even came to enjoy that after awhile, it takes planning and strategy to get your favorite items back into town to be ready for next time.

Its definitely a 'hardcore dungeon-crawler' like it advertises itself to be...I wish the Wii had more games with complex psychological storylines like this. If you like anime, thought-provoking rpgs, or just hacking and slashing, I'd definitely recommend Baroque.

5 out of 5 stars Caution: Not for the unintelligent   July 21, 2008

This game is a lot of fun. It's a great action-RPG, but be warned it is frustrating at times. The point of the game is obviously to advance the story line and also to figure out what exactly the story line is. The frustrating part about the game is that every time you complete a tower and advance the story line you start over at level zero with no items. There are ways to save a limited number of items from your last trip through the tower and you figure that out as you play. Give the game some time and enjoy it. Don't get frustrated and quit after the first time your character gets reset.

4 out of 5 stars Great Game....Completely Underrated...   May 8, 2008

I pre-ordered this game and only played it once since writing this review, but I fell in love with it immediately. I eagerly waited for it to come after ordering it and, in the meantime, I looked up every screen shot, video, and review I could find. I wasn't put off by any bad reviews because I knew what the game would be like having played many others like it in the past. Playing the original Rogue throughout my childhood, and loving it even more in adulthood, I knew that Baroque would be exactly what I've been looking for in a Wii game since the console came out. I personally have zero complaints with the controls or graphics and I'm looking forward to enjoying countless hours of game play for years to come. People who own the PS3 or XBOX360 may be put off by the graphics and repetitive nature of the game, but gamers who enjoy Rogue-like RPG's will love it.
